Maepa Primary School: 1939 – 2008

HISTORY
The old building behind the modern structure was built in 1939. Little is known to who was involved in the construction, who designed it, who built it and how long it took.
What is clearly visible, is the primitive method of construction. Rocks were used for bricks, and red mud was used for mortar. The doors and window frames were made from wood and the roof is made out of sheets of corrugated iron.
However, the first days of the school dates back much earlier than 1939 when the old structure was built. Local folklore speculates that the first classes were held in old mud and reet structures as early as the beginning of the 1920’s making Maepa Primary School nearly 90 years old.

Iketla Lodge nestles in the middle of a 540 hectare private nature conservancy on the Panorama Route, approximately 30 minutes’ drive from the famous Blyde River Canyon.
The lodge is surrounded by undulating mountains, valleys and cliffs. Unspoilt African bush and indigenous forests are a haven for more than 200 different bird species and numerous migratory species of wildlife.
