Gateway to the Escarpment...

Ohrigstad village and -valley nestles in the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains, at close proximity to the Blyde River Canyon, God's Window and  Potholes. Ohrigstad, the oldest town on the Panorama Route was founded in 1845 by Hendrik Potgieter, the well-known "Voortrekker" leader.
Relics of Iron- and Stone Age civilizations found in the area indicate that the Pedi and San groups lived here thousands of years ago.

Ohrigstad has a wide variety of accommodation to choose from, ranging from bed and breakfast establishments to game lodges and guest farms.
The Greater Ohrigstad offers the visitor many more options concerning attractions, activities and various opportunities which are listed here. Ohrigstad is situated between the; 24°32’ & 24°55’ longitudes and the 28°32’ & 28°42’ latitudes on an altitude of 1,166m above sea level. It's location causes very pleasant climatic conditions year round making it an ideal tourist destination or stop over to plenty other destinations.
The region abounds with plenty unexplored possibilities and opportunities concerning business, tourism, agriculture and local communities.
Ohrigstad is surrounded by a diverse agricultural community due to the fertile nature of the valley producing from citrus to seed maize and vegetables. Rietfontein and Maepa villages are in close proximity from Ohrigstad and are the only sources for labour due to the lack of any township. Rietfontein supports 60 000 residents while Maepa only a few hundred inhabitants. Ohrigstad and valley consist out of a couple of  thousand residents.
